BUILDING FOR
THE FUTURE

ABB Motion stands at the forefront of engineering innovation, specializing in the creation of drives, motors, generators, and integrated digital powertrain solutions. Since its establishment in 1988, ABB has played a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future for global industries. This commitment extends to enhancing energy efficiency, upholding safety standards, and ensuring precise control across their entire product spectrum. Backed by a reputation of reliability and trust, ABB Motion’s stature has attracted significant investments, resulting in the establishment of an expansive, cutting-edge campus spanning an impressive 529,000 square feet.

THE CHALLENGE

A challenge Briohn encountered and had to overcome during this project was figuring out how to develop on the land itself. While conducting geotechnical research, the Briohn team discovered that the soil wasn’t sufficiently robust for the project’s scale. After considering alternatives like stone columns, the most sensible and cost-effective solution ended up being dynamic compaction. By employing a 60,000-pound compactor, Briohn’s team ensured a solid foundation for the new facility. In addition, without New Berlin’s foresight in establishing a TID, this development would never have happened. For years, this property remained undeveloped, primarily due to unfavorable soil conditions and the high cost of extending utilities to the property. By leveraging a TIF, the development team successfully secured the vital financial support required to bring this project to life.

THE RESULT

The latest addition to ABB’s portfolio is its new Motion U.S. Headquarters & Logistics facility, comprising of interconnected North and South buildings united by a dynamic “connector corridor.” This architectural endeavor involved a significant amount of creative planning, which in result will allow ABB to increase their production ability for electric drives in the US and improve their customer service.  Positioned in New Berlin, Wisconsin, this location is designated to be ABB’s Motion U.S. Headquarters, Manufacturing Hub, and Distribution Center for their drives and motion services businesses.  Eagerly anticipated to open its doors in late 2024, the campus will become home to a lively community of 720 ABB employees, all joining together to work towards creating a more sustainable and efficient future.

We are very pleased with the work the Briohn team did to support our expansion. The building is beautiful and functional, and allows us to grow into the space even more in the near future.
